Adventure for your Littles Ones: New Summer Activities for Kids at Snowbasin

Biking the beginner area at Snowbasin as a family

Exploring Snowbasin’s trail as a family. Our youngest on a Strider bike, available for rent or buy at the Grizzly Center.

As a parent, I’ve learned my fun is exponentially increased when my kids are having fun too. So I am quick to notice when a resort works hard to provide options that “spread-the-stoke” among my kids.

A few weeks ago we headed up to check out the new kid-friendly attractions at Snowbasin on the weekends.

If you missed my last post, here is a great family hike with amazing scenery: Rave Hike: A high alpine, flowering beauty for the whole family. But beyond hiking, here are some great activities for your kids to enjoy while you sit back and enjoy summertime at Blues, Brews, and BBQ!

1. Not a mountain biker? Still bring the kids’ bikes!

The Skills park at Snowbasin

50 Feet from where we parked the car, we jumped immediately on the Needles Trail which begins with flat single track. The kids spun laps on the small skills park behind the Grizzly Center which is perfect for kids on balance bikes or older kids/adults looking to work on some new tricks. (Dad had fun too. :) )

Snowbasin has teamed up with Strider Bikes to get even the youngest riders (as young as age 2) out riding the trails. If you have younger kids and are new to the Strider Bike revolution or maybe unconvinced of their awesomeness, here is a post that follows my son as he learned to ride a bike at 22-months-old. Can your 22-month old ride a bike? Yes, they can.

My kids spent most their time racing around the loop, even more time than they did at the new playground. Which brings me to:

2. The new playground is a huge hit!

playground at Snowbasin

Designed to blend in with the mountain environment, the new playground is great for kids of all ages. The park resembles a log cabin, but with slides, monkey bars, bridges, and stepping-stones. There is a picnic table where you can have a snack or sack lunch.

3. New inflatable adventure features… a different one every weekend!

IMG_9784

Large, inflatable bounce houses where my kids can bounce their energy away? Yes, please! With different ones every weekend, they can have something to look forward to if you head on up multiple times this summer.

You can purchase a pass good for the ENTIRE day for $8 in the Grizzly Center.

We had a fantastic day up at Snowbasin biking as a family and enjoying quality time in the sun. Smiles all around!

Blues, Brews & BBQ Recap: Folk Hogan

GEDSC DIGITAL CAMERA
If you haven’t heard, Blue, brews & BBQ is the place to be on Sundays in Utah. With hiking, biking, gondola rides, a playground, bounce house for the kids, bungee trampoline, amazing food, shopping and killer views of the mountains why would you want to be anywhere else?

This past Sunday my family packed up the truck and made our way to Earl’s Lodge to see one of my favorite local bands, Folk Hogan.  The heat was intense that day so we made a beeline to the snowcone stand and tried to resist the temptation to pour it over our heads. With blue stained mouths we made our way to the huge grassy field to pick our spot and luckily got there early enough to get a perfect spot up front.  The views  are amazing and as you are laying in the grass looking up the mountain it’s hard to imagine being anywhere else.

Folk Hogan is one of those bands everyone must see live, a band that you will not be able to resist dancing wildly to.  When I arrived they were already a song into their set and a group of belly dancers was shaking their hips to the music by the stage. The girl children took off across the grass, spinning and giggling  before spotting a balloon maker and chasing him down to request butterflies.

If I had to describe the band in just two words it would most definitely be ‘gypsy punk’  and  as soon as you see them enter the stage you will understand why. This band is anything but ordinary with 6 members playing  an accordion, mandolin, bass, banjo, guitar and drums.  Folk Hogan brings humor to their music with songs like ‘March of the Drunkard’, ‘Zombie Prince’ and ‘Skeleton Scramble’, it really is hard to not love them. This band is oozing with talent and the proof is in the smiles on everyone’s face but most of all they are just plain fun and in the heat of summer, on the last day of the weekend, that  truly is the best thing of all.

It was so nice to see people outside, dancing, smiling and most importantly making friends with strangers.  When you are outside  in the open, it’s so much easier to strike up a conversation, a smile becomes an invitation to chat and children who have never met become instant friends  just by chasing each other through the grass.  I wanted to stay all day and was sad I had to miss  Diego’s Umbrella but after  dancing, the bounce house, a gondola ride, hiking  and bellies full of snow cones and BBQ french fries,  the girl children were ready to go.

Snowbasin’s Blues, Brews & BBQ  goes through September so be sure to make your way up the mountain one Sunday or 10 to check it out. Take a look at the concert schedule HERE and  all the delicious items on the menu this summer herehere & here.  Be sure to pack  plenty of sunscreen and get ready to have the best summer ever.

Desert Noises

Desert Noises is Kyle Henderson, Tyler Osmond, Patrick Boyer, and Brennan Allen, four adventurers from Utah Valley, UT. Ask about their recent musical influences, and you’ll extract a litany on the riches of Tom Petty, Fleetwood Mac, and Tame Impala. If it seems an unlikely trio of choices, it simply means that you haven’t yet become acquainted with their propulsive, jangle-rich breed of rock ‘n roll. Desert Noises make music for shouting into canyons, jumping into rivers, and getting married to the wide-open road. With a strong maturity in their songwriting, they conjure the majesty of the American pastoral landscape.

While one can pick out definite strains of blues and Americana, their often-ferocious delivery and penchant for shredding guitars elicits a powerful transcendence into psychedelic rock. This is felt most strongly in their live performances, where they harness their visceral energy in new ways each night.
