Women’s Freeski Elevated to Dew Cup Discipline for First Time in Tour History
Burr Ridge, Ill. – Nov. 3, 2011 – The Winter Dew Tour Nike Open, kicking off the 2011-12 season at Breckenridge Ski Resort, will open athlete registration today to snowboarders and freeskiers looking to compete in superpipe and slopestyle. Gold medal Olympian Shaun White will be returning after a two-year hiatus to reclaim the Dew Cup he won in the 2009-2010 season. He will be facing Louie Vito in the superpipe, who left Snowbasin last season with the championship title. Danny Davis is also confirmed to compete this season, which will be his first full year back on the contest circuit after suffering a back injury in early 2010. Freeskiing game-changer Simon Dumont is slated to compete, as well as Torin Yater-Wallace, who dominated the superpipe in the Gatorade Free Flow Tour before moving up to the pro ranks in 2010.
For the first time in Dew Tour history, women’s freeskiing will be elevated to a Dew Cup discipline on the Tour. At the Killington and Snowbasin stops, female skiers will compete for points towards the overall standings and the Dew Cup. Expect to see top women’s freeskiers such as Sarah Burke and Jen Hudak bring their top game to the pipe and slope in the race for the title.
Women’s events will take on a new level of focus this year. The ladies will compete in snowboard superpipe and slopestyle in Breckenridge, while skiers will have a chance to show their skills on the slope and in the pipe in Killington. All women’s snowboard and freeski events will be held in Snowbasin at the Toyota Championships, where the women will compete for the Dew Cup in their respective disciplines. Competition will be intense as Kelly Clark, Jamie Anderson and more of the top women’s winter athletes look to seize the opportunity to gain points towards the coveted Dew Cup.

Luke Mitrani Kills It in Pipe, Vito Takes Cup, Clark Gets Win and Cup
After pulling the run of his life, Luke Mitrani stood at the top of the podium and in classic style, said that all he remembered is that he blacked out, got to the bottom of the pipe and the crowd was screaming for him.
The 20-year-old Frends rider just happened to pull the highest scoring Winter Dew Tour pipe run ever, and his 97.00 bumped his older brother Jack off the podium into fourth place. They jokingly duked it out at the base of the Snowbasin pipe, but Jack said he was super stoked for his little bro.
Luke linked together a double Michalchuk, frontside 9, backside 5, front 10 and cab double 10 for the win.
Luke Mitrani throwing the double Michalchuk
“I’ve actually never won a contest this big so I’m pretty pumped right now,” Mitrani said. “I didn’t do so hot at the past couple stops and my confidence level wasn’t so high, so I went into this contest not really stressing, just having fun, and I guess that’s when I do best.”
Louie Vito won the last two stops of the Winter Dew Tour and came into this weekend’s Toyota Championships favored to win the overall Dew Cup, and that’s exactly what he did. Unfortunately, he wasn’t able to pull the runs he wanted and finished off the podium in seventh place.
“You know I would have liked to get up on the podium, but Luke and Greg rode super well,” Vito said. “It would have been nice to get on there with them because the riding level was sick tonight, but it is what it is. I got the Dew Cup, so I guess on the bright side I’m happy to be ending with that. It’s a love hate. I’m stoked I got the Dew Cup, but bummed I didn’t get on the podium.”
Louie Vito, your new snowboard pipe Dew Cup Champ
Greg Bretz, 20, was killing it in finals, and the Mammoth local finished second with three 1080 variations that earned him a 95.00. He even pulled back-to-back double corks in his second run.
“I’ve only linked back-to-back doubles once before that and I put it down and it was amazing,” Bretz said.
Third place with 92.00 went to the veteran of the bunch, 28-year-old Steve Fisher, who decided to keep his secret weapon, well…secret, until an opportunity like this presented itself. And it was in front of a capacity crowd lining the pipe that Fisher landed his first ever frontside 10 double cork.
“I’ve done it into an airbag a few times, but that’s it,” Fisher said. “I tried it on a wall once but didn’t even come close.”
Dialing in tricks like that is exactly how he keeps up with the progression of the sport and competes against the younger guys.
In the women’s field, Kelly Clark went from dead last in Finals at the first event of the season, to impressive back-to-back wins at last month’s Winter Dew Tour and tonight’s Toyota Championship. Her results put her in first place overall and she collected the second Dew Cup of her career.
Kelly Clark blasting
“I’m glad I could recover from my Breckenridge experience and to come back and win the last two and walk away with the Dew Cup,” Clark said. “It’s a lot of fun and I’m even happier with my riding.”
Her winning run had a frontside 7, cab 7, frontside 10, cab 3, frontside 5 and backside 5.
Last year’s Dew Cup champ Kaitlyn Farrington was in third-place going into her final run, and she stepped it up with a backside 5, frontside 7, cab 7, backside 5 and an alley oop 5 that bumped her up to second with a 91.00.
“I’m super stoked,” Farrington said. “This is one of the best pipes I’ve ridden this season so it was just great to come here and be comfortable.”
Japan’s Soko Yamaoka also increased her score on her second run and finished in third overall after a solid run that included a McTwist, frontside 7, and back-to-back 5s and a score of 86.25.
“I’m really, really happy,” Yamaoka said. “Snowboarding is my life.”
Local Favorite Alex Schlopy Takes Top Honors in the Men’s Freeski Slopestyle Final and Kaya Turski wins the Women’s at Snowbasin Resort
Ogden, Utah – February 13, 2011 – After dominating on the slopes all season, 19-year-old Bobby Brown of Breckenridge, Colo. concluded the Toyota Championship as the overall men’s freeski slopestyle Dew Cup champion. With his hometown cheering him on, Park City, Utah native Alex Schlopy, 18, won his first Winter Dew Tour final in men’s freeski slopestyle. On the women’s front, Canadian Kay Turski, 22, landed on top of the podium with a winning score of 89.50.
“I’m super stoked about winning the Dew Cup,” said Brown. “It’s great to be out here in the sunny weather here in Snowbasin and to end up winning. I’m pumped.”
The men’s freeski slopestyle final concluded with local Utah athletes in the number one and two podium positions. Schlopy wowed the crowd with a technical run that included a front 3 swap, blind 3 swap, blind 2 out, blind 630 out of the canyon, lefside 900 to switch 1440 for a top score of 94.50. After winning the Last Chance Qualifier and placing first in the prelims, Utah’s Joss Christensen, age 19, finished in second with a score of 92.00. Australia’s Russ Henshaw earned the third podium position with a score of 87.50.
“It’s crazy to have won. I’ve been looking at those Dew Tour trophies for a long time, and I finally got one so I’m stoked,” said Schlopy. “It’s a beautiful day out here, and we’re having fun. It’s Utah, my hometown state so it’s good.”
In the women’s freeski slopestyle final, Turski stomped the competition, throwing out a front switchup into switch 270 blind up to a front 270 out of the flat rail to a cab 720 to a cab 540, for a top score of 89.50. Devin Logan, age 17 of Dover, Vt., finished second with an 85.00 and Australia’s Anna Segal, 24, rounded out the podium in third with a 79.25.
“I’m just really excited to have won today,” said Turski. “I pulled it together, and I’m really stoked on my season so far so I hope I can just keep it going.”
The four-day competition is the third and final stop on the 2010-11 Winter Dew Tour season featuring men and women’s snowboarding and freeskiing disciplines. The Toyota Championship will conclude today with the men and women’s snowboard slopestyle finals where the remaining Dew Cup champions will be honored.
