SNOWBASIN TO HOST FREE AVALANCHE AWARENESS CLASS

The Snow Safety division at Snowbasin will host a “Know Before you Go” Avalanche Awareness class on Saturday, January 9th. The class will be held in Earl’s Lodge at Snowbasin, and will begin at 6:30 p.m. There is no charge for the hour-long class, which will be presented by GR Fletcher and Frank Waikhart of Snowbasin, and Craig Gordon of the Utah Avalanche Center.

As a follow-up to the class, Snowbasin Ski Patrol will lead a field day the following morning. Those that attend the class on Saturday are invited to meet at 9:00 a.m. on Sunday, January 10th at bottom of Needles Gondola.  Ski Patrol will guide a 2-hour practical session on the mountain, where they will talk about control work at Snowbasin and backcountry safe travel. Proper backcountry gear and safety will also be discussed. There is no charge for the mountain session with the purchase of a lift ticket.

Snowbasin is committed to the safety, education and enjoyment of its guests. “Our patrol is available as a resource to guests on our mountain,” said Frank Waikart, Snowbasin Ski Patrol. “This outreach effort is intended to enhance guests skiing experience. We will provide tools for skiers to explore their own boundaries safely through education.”

Reservations are not necessary. For more information on avalanche safety, visit: www.Avalanche.org.  Snow conditions and mountain information are available on the Snow Report Line: 801.620.1100 or www.snowbasin.com.

    Thanks SNOWBASIN,

This is a great service to the backcountry community of Weber County.

This is a great idea! My wife and I absolutely want to go.

I wish this were a Friday/Saturday activity instead of Saturday/Sunday. Nevertheless we still are planning to go to the Earl’s Lodge class–it would have been great if this were all on Saturday.

Thanks for putting this on though.

  3. Brandon Says:

I’m guessing that season passes count for “free with purchase of a lift ticket”? Hope so, would love to attend.

  4. jholmgren Says:

Yes it does! Hope you can make it.

  5. ET Says:

Since the SUN morning class is 2 hr, can you buy a 1/2 day pass for this class. I am a X-C skier and Snow shoe-r.

I am alerting the Ogden Sierra Club and WP.org re this class. After Canyon Sports/ Ogden’s Avalanche class on 12.10 attracted over 45 people, outings leaders for OSC WP.org expressed an interest in attending the next FREE AVALANCHE AWARENESS CLASS given.

The sunday morning class is for expert Alpine skiers, and we do not have a morning half day ticket available. I would suggest you put on a pair of skis and enjoy the entire day! You are welcome to just come to the Saturday evening class and skip Sunday.

  7. Doug Says:

This is awesome and much appreciated. Thank you.

  8. Captain DJ Says:

Can the Sunday morning class be attended by snowboarders as well

  9. Jodi Says:

We met the guy who is uploading pictures to website and is working on a blog. Great guy with good ideas for SB. Can’t remember his name, but he took a picture of me and my daughter and said you could help us get a copy.
